Silver hair will forever have a place on our hair inspo Pinterest board. If we're super honest, our silver hair images actually have their own dedicated board. Why? Because that icy white, opalescent hue looks simultaneously mystical and magical and understated and chic (as well as annoyingly, relatively unachievable). Let's face it, the less possible a hair colour is, the more we want it.
Channelling the perfect mix of badass Khaleesi, unicorn Ariana Grande and seriously chic Meryl Streep, silver hair is everything we want to be. Fantastical, high fashion and flattering on everyone, silver hair is the easiest way to update your grey for 2020.
Oyster grey is the newest silver hair trend for 2021, merging platinum blonde with iridescent, nacreous tones. 'What makes this colour different to an icy blonde is the warm tones, ' says Blue Tit stylist Ben Rossiter.
'This has become popular due to the warm tones that are pushed through when lightening the hair with bleaching. Like the inside of an oyster, this is a shade that is pearlescent and gives a multidimensional colour.'
Why is oyster grey having a moment now? According to the pros, lockdown limitations and changing attitudes towards tonal palettes are driving the trend.
'This year's palette is moving towards warmer golden ash and beige greys as they are more flattering on a wider range of skin tones and ages, and it looks more natural for summer, ' says Blue Tit stylist Chelsey McQueen.
'As of the recent lockdown, it’s been unrealistic to get into salon so naturally the silver/grey clients hair has faded and pushed through a warmer based blonde, ' adds Rossiter.
Luckily for those of us wanting to dip our toe in, pearly oyster grey is actually more achievable than it sounds (and won't require diving to the bottom of the ocean for).
'Achieving this colour is a lot more realistic than an icy white. For people with darker hair this is best as you don't need to bleach the hair to a clean white base, which can be hard to achieve on everyone, ' advises Rossiter.
'When it comes to maintenance, I would recommend a toner refresh every 6 weeks. Potentially even the use of a colour depositing conditioner which will help to lengthen in-between appointments.'
